What attracted you to Nonprofit HR?

I was drawn to the culture at Nonprofit HR and the chance to cultivate connections with a diverse array of clients all committed to meaningful missions.

What is your favorite aspect of talent management?

The aspect of talent management I find most appealing is the human element. I thoroughly enjoy meeting new individuals, delving into their motivations, understanding their personal aspirations, and ultimately, connecting them with the ideal nonprofit organization that aligns with their goals.

What is the coolest thing you’re working on right now and why?

One of the most exciting endeavors I’m currently engaged in involves collaborative projects. What I find particularly remarkable is that, despite being a remote employee, we have initiatives that span across different business units. This not only enhances our relationships as colleagues but also strengthens our connections with our clients.

What was your favorite thing to do as a kid? 

An area of passion I’ve had since I was a kid is animal rights. My favorite thing to do was go to the zoo… I now have one in my own home! My husband and I adopted three dogs and two cats.

I have also always volunteered for animal shelters. Recently, I got heavily involved in various roles with SPCA Tampa Bay, which is a nonprofit that works to protect animals from abuse and neglect. I find the adoption process fascinating — helping animals and new families create a bond, and evaluating whether or not this potential match will be a great long-term fit for the family. 

Which two people would you like to have brunch with and why?

Agatha Christie and Richard Osman. I absolutely LOVE a cozy mystery, and these two are my favorite authors to read.

What is a fun fact about you?

I enjoy new experiences, whether that be going on a local ghost tour, swimming with sting rays, or trying a new restaurant, if it is something exciting, sign me up!

Cassie’s Top 3 Animal Adoption Tips!

When you start browsing for animals online, you’ll want to take an inventory of your home life and ask yourself:

  • Do you have a yard?
  • Do you have enough time to walk a dog for 30-60 minutes every day?
  • Do elderly people visit your home often?
  • Can you invest the time and resources in a younger pet that may not have learned to live in a house?
  • These factors will help you decide what size and type of pet is best for you.

An animal might look great online, but you’ll want to meet a dog, for instance, to assess your lifestyle compatibility. You go to the shelter prepared with a couple of questions: Is this animal going to get along with every family member? Is the temperament one that matches mine?

It might be that your first choice doesn’t get along with a family member or another pet in the household. When people want to consider several pet options they often ask: “Can you help point me in the right direction? What would you recommend since you know these animals the best?” That’s where we — being deeply involved in our mission — jump in and offer our recommendations.

Adjustment times vary and sometimes the pet needs time to adjust to the new home. As the animal shelter, we offer support to the new family, for example when the pet has housebreaking issues.

Then there are the extra expenses. You may need to get a dog trainer. You may need to go to a dog psychologist to diagnose and treat animal behavior problems, and provide counseling and support to you, the owner. If you find this is all worth it, be prepared to commit. As volunteers, we support you, your family and your animal to ensure a long-term fit.

Adopting a pet is a big commitment, and it’s important to be honest about whether you have the time and resources to care for the animal properly. Many adoptions are returned because the family didn’t do their research ahead of time and didn’t consider the time and financial commitment required to care for the pet. Within weeks the honeymoon period fades and the challenges start to surface.

We can tell from the check-ins and phone calls that the owners cannot fix some concerns, e.g., they can’t make $5,000 grow on trees. We understand that sometimes returning an animal is the best thing for both the family and the pet, so we redirect our focus to see if there’s a better animal fit for all the right reasons.
