Visionary Leader Will Drive Diversity, Impact Empowering Black, Hispanic MedTech Leaders
WASHINGTON, D.C., February 7, 2024 — MedTech Color proudly announces the appointment of Katrina H. Holland as its first Executive Director. This strategic move comes at a pivotal time when the nonprofit is poised for accelerated growth. MedTech Color unanimously voted to elect Holland to spearhead their primary fundraising and development efforts. In collaboration with MedTech Color, Impact Search Advisors by Nonprofit HR successfully concluded the executive search, and Holland’s tenure began January 1, 2024.
MedTech Color, founded in 2017, is dedicated to fostering a united community of Black and Hispanic leaders in the medical device industry, driving diversity and influencing thought leadership. In just a few years, MedTech Color has made a remarkable impact on the medical device industry. MedTech Color, fueled by the passion of its founding members and dedicated professionals, has transformed the medical device landscape in three impactful ways:
- Sparking diverse innovation by investing in 30 cutting-edge companies led by people of color.
- Breaking down healthcare barriers by amplifying the voices of African American women encouraged to participate in clinical trials.
- Building a powerhouse community of over 4,000 individuals passionate about diversity and inclusion in MedTech — a robust network for mentorship and progress.
“We are thrilled to welcome Katrina H. Holland as the inaugural Executive Director of MedTech Color as she propels us toward reach and impact expansion in the MedTech industry. Her nonprofit experience is the exact, necessary leadership we need to help reach our primary objectives of building community, driving thought leadership and supporting the next 100 CEOs of color in MedTech. She is the perfect catalyst for our growth,” said Kwame Ulmer, Founder, Board Member and Initial Executive Director of MedTech Color.
The search for MedTech Color’s first Executive Director spotlighted the need for a candidate who closely shares their values and can lead the organization’s rapid advancement, while strategically enhancing the operations. MedTech Color prioritized a “player-coach” in their search, who can partner with the Board of Directors and committees, and manage a lean, expanding organization while overseeing a large group of volunteers.
Throughout Holland’s 25+ year career, she excelled in legal, medicine, science, tax and nursing professions. She showcases a proven track record of aligning organizations with strategic goals, driving measurable impact. Her comprehensive background in revenue generation, board and stakeholder engagement and strategic planning uniquely positions her to lead MedTech Color’s rapid growth.
Before taking the helm at MedTech Color, Holland held the reins at the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM), a $5 million professional association for over 6,000 certified professionals. As CEO, she spearheaded a pivotal move to recognize diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) — not just as ethical imperatives, but as powerful engines for innovation and progress. This forward-thinking approach saw her championing initiatives that helped to center midwifery as a solution to the maternal health crisis.
Holland also orchestrated a financial turnaround at ACNM and secured $1.8M in private grant funding for midwifery workforce growth and diversification. A dynamic public speaker, Holland represented the organization externally, delivering impactful presentations on Capitol Hill and actively participating in Congressional Black Caucus Healthcare Roundtables. In short, Katrina wasn’t just leading the ACNM into the future; she was redefining what that future looked like, paving the way for a more diverse and impactful organization.
At the National Association of Enrolled Agents (NAEA) (5 years), Katrina led partnership growth, virtual learning, journal redesign and rebranding of the nearly 50-year-old organization, while boosting member value and non-dues revenue. Before that, she held healthcare leadership roles at the International Association for the Study of Pain and the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
“I am deeply honored to take on the role of MedTech Color’s first Executive Director, an organization whose mission resonates with my fundamental personal and professional principles. MedTech Color, dedicated to advancing health equity, fostering innovation and promoting professional growth, is actively cultivating a robust community that positively impacts health outcomes for diverse patient populations,” said Holland.
Holland holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Chicago. She is an active member and diversity advocate of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), where she served on the Diversity and Inclusion Committee from 2017-2019. She is an expert and avid national panel public speaker on inclusive board governance, maximizing ROI, and building and maintaining top talent in the post-pandemic workplace. She received a Certificate of Special Recognition from the U.S. House of Representatives for her contributions.
“On behalf of Impact Search Advisors by Nonprofit HR, we are thrilled to have partnered with MedTech Color on this critical search for their organization. We look forward to watching MedTech Color grow and continue to have an impact under their new leader,” said Bert Ruiz, Managing Director of Impact Search Advisors by Nonprofit HR.
