WTOP: 5 ways nonprofits can…
ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
Purpose Built Communities believes neighborhoods can become pathways to prosperity for everyone who lives there. To make sure that happens, Purpose Built partners with local leaders to design, direct, and accelerate neighborhood transformation initiatives across the United States that will lead to greater racial equity, improved health outcomes, and increased upward mobility for all residents. The Purpose Built Communities model for revitalization is holistic – it includes building affordable, mixed-income housing, establishing a cradle-to-college education pathway, creating community wellness programs and facilities, and designing a thriving commercial core that leads to economic vitality. The uniqueness of the Purpose Built model exists in the fact that the vision for revitalization is 1) resident-centered so people who have deep roots in the community and call it home are able to help shape its future and continue to live there as it grows; 2) partnerships and activities to achieve that vision are coordinated by a dedicated, nonprofit community quarterback organization; and 3) the vision is executed within a defined neighborhood, making the initiative hyperlocal, guaranteeing a healthier, stronger, more sustainable community. The Purpose Built Communities Network includes 28 of these community quarterback organizations in 15 states. For more information, visit purposebuiltcommunities.org.
